SPRING DAY OF PERCUSSION 2009
Greetings FLPAS Members!

I hope this finds you well, and ready for our big Spring Day of Percussion at UCF this April 4th. Among our guests will be Kevin Bobo, Liam Teague and Robert Chappell, Marty Morell, and the Orlando Philarmonic percussion section—all very exciting! I’d like to share some additional information about a very special event that concludes the day, and you’re all invited to participate!

Before going into the details, a HUGE thank-you goes to Jeff Moore for hosting the event, and doing a ton of legwork to put this particular section of the Day together. This is going to be amazing!

About this Special Event--MUSSER MARIMBA ORCHESTRA!!!!

On April 4th, 2009, at the Florida Day of Percussion on the UCF Campus in Orlando, we are re-creating a 100 person Musser Marimba Band and YOU can participate. To facilitate the performance, three of Musser's classic arrangements have been edited to fit 2 players on an instrument (all instruments are 4.3 octave or low "A" marimbas). The pairings are Marimba 1 with Marimba 4 and Marimba 2 with Marimba 5. Marimba 3 can play on an instrument alone.

How can I participate:

We need 100 players on at least 60 instruments. You can participate by you (and/or your group) bringing a marimba(s) to the Day of Percussion on April 4th. We may be able to accommodate a limited number of performers who do not have an instrument, but check with Prof. Moore when you register to be sure. As of 2-11-09, we have 41 players and 30 instruments, so we are still in need of both and you can help. Students from all of the major colleges and high schools in FL have already committed, and students from other states have already contacted us about participating—be sure and get your request to Prof. Moore as soon as you can!

To register for the 2009 Florida DOP Musser Mass Marimba Band, please complete the following steps:

1. Email Prof. Moore if you want to participate. He has a participant Master List and needs to keep the ensemble balanced appropriately, and will make assignments on that basis. E-mail as early as possible because all parts will be be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

2. After receiving a reply from Prof. Moore confirming your part assignment, download the appropriate part and complete ensemble mp3 file (you will be sent a website address with pdf versions of the parts). You can practice with the recordings posted on the website to help prepare for the performance tempo and to learn how your part fits with the rest of the ensemble.

3. PRACTICE and prepare your part thoroughly!

The Day of Percussion, April 4th

1. Arrive at the DOP by 9:00 am to see all the workshops and concerts. If you are a PAS member, there is no charge, if you are not a PAS member, you can register at the Day or pay $10.00 to attend all the events and perform with the group.

2. The Marimba Concert will conclude the Day's events at 5:30 pm, so you can keep your marimba in your vehicle until the afternoon or we may be able to store a limited number of instruments inside the Visual Arts Building, where the concert is taking place.

3. We will briefly rehearse at approximately 5:00 and then go right into the performance as close to 5:30 as possible. Should you have any questions, you can email me at jparks@fsu.edu, or you can go straight to the source and email Jeff at jmmoore@pegasus.cc.ucf.edu. Looking forward to seeing you all soon! JP
