Spring 2006 Newsletter

Hello everyone!  We hope that your semester is off to a great start and look forward to seeing and hearing from you in the coming months.  As always, any submissions that you may have for future editions of the newsletter (information on upcoming or past performances, clinics, awards, etc) are greatly appreciated as we strive to connect percussionists and percussion educators throughout the state of Mississippi.

Day of Percussion 2006
Believe it or not, a whole year has almost past since we last met for the Day of Percussion last spring at Hinds Community College.  This year’s event is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 8 in the Jackson area.  It will feature a variety of clinicians and we invite college and high school percussion ensembles to perform.  Last year’s Day of Percussion featured a record number of attendees and performers.  We are looking forward to continuing that success.  Information will be sent by email to all chapter members in the coming months.

McComb State Percussion Clinic
McComb High School will be hosting the McComb State Percussion Clinic on Jan 21 2006. This clinic is designed to educate the younger percussionists in your bands and provide practical information they can use in your program. The areas to be covered are Marching Batterie, Concert Batterie, Mallets, and Drum Set. The clinics are designed to demonstrate proper technique and application in an understandable format so that the youngest of player will benefit. Our goal is for your beginners and intermediate students to receive the type of information they need to be successful.
The clinicians for the event are Dr. John Wooton from USM-Marching, Mr. Ricky Burkhead from The Univ. of MS- Mallets, SSgt. Steve Giove from the USMC- Drum set, and Mr. Curt Smith from Franklin Co.-Concert Batterie. Mr Burkhead and Dr. Wooton currently serve as Percussive Arts Society State Chapter President and Vice President. Each portion of the clinic will be approximately one hour. The marching and drum set portions will be slightly longer and performed in a general assembly. The Concert and Mallet portions will be performed in two groups with each group rotating after the completion of that area.
McComb High School has more than adequate facilities and all of the areas are connected indoors. We will feature a large display and door prizes for your students. Corporate sponsors such as Pearl, Vic Firth, Regal Tip, Sabian, Latin Percussion, Drum Workshop, Silver Fox, Grover, Evans, Zildjian, Ross Mallets, Mike Balter, The Percussive Arts Society and others are furnishing materials for the clinic. This clinic is also a MS Chapter P.A.S. sanctioned event. Clinic fees are $8 for non-PAS members and $5 for PAS members. Enclosed is a tentative schedule for the day, registration form and a map to the school. I am very enthusiastic about this event and know that this will be very beneficial to your students and a great day of fun. If you have questions you may contact Chris Smith at 601-684-1979 or at 601-754-1988 and by e-mail at smithc2@mccomb.k12.ms.us.
