2006

Nebraska Percussive Arts Society

Meeting  #6 minutes

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Present were Rich Jones, Jim Krutz, Brian Leahy, and Tomm Roland.

The chapter officers held an informal meeting in Omaha over dinner. The agenda items and what was discussed are as follows:

Chapter meetings – The date of the next meeting will be decided shortly via e-mail with its location being in either Lincoln or Omaha. All present agreed that they would like to have the chapter meetings open to all members. In the past, those meetings have usually been during the Day of Percussion with meetings with only officers attending held at other points in time during the year. Once the details of the next meeting have been established, it will be announced to the membership via e-mail and on the chapter website.

Day of Percussion – A tentative date of March 10, 2007 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha was announced for the next Day of Percussion, but it was found to be in conflict with a competition in Hastings that same day. Tomm Roland will look into an alternative date that might work better around that same time frame. Also, targeting band directors and the idea of giving them some kind of group discount to help them bring their percussion sections to the DoP was mentioned.

Membership – Tomm stated that we currently have between 60 and 70 members in the chapter. Ways in which the chapter could try and increase the membership by being a presence at events such as NMEA, NSBA, indoor drumline competitions and the like were discussed. Also mentioned was contacting band directors and percussion assistants to get them active and involved.

Treasurer’s Report – Jim Krutz announced that, currently, the chapter has an account balance of $621.36. The 2006 Day of Percussion made a slight amount of money for the chapter. Tomm stated that the chapter received a grant of approximately $950 from the National PAS. The grant is not reflected in the chapter account balance, as it is sent to us at a later date.

Other event ideas – Ideas for events other than the Day of Percussion were discussed. Examples such as having a clinic for band directors to aid in working with their percussion sections was one. An open forum for percussion assistants / drumline instructors was another. Smaller clinics held at the high school level were also mentioned.

Chapter Web Site – Brian Leahy will contact the webmaster for the National PAS web site to find out what limitations there might be in what we can and cannot do as a chapter on our website and elsewhere on the internet. Interest in creating a chapter-specific online forum and e-mail list is there and would be easy to do. A response from National PAS is currently pending.

E-mail list – In an effort to reach more of our members, as well as to include potential members such as band directors and percussion assistants, the idea of a chapter-specific e-mailing list was brought up. Contact information is currently being collected in preparation for doing so. Such a list would have included with it the opportunity for the recipient of the message to opt out of future correspondence.

Audition Process – another topic brought up was the idea to revise how All-State percussion auditions are done. Currently, potential candidates audition for individual instruments, such as mallets, snare and tympani. It was stated that the preference would be to change it so that the percussionist would audition and, based on that, be placed on the various instrumentation by the judges.

Respectfully submitted,
Brian Leahy
Secretary

Meeting  #5 minutes

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

Present were Aramis Buenrostro, Greg Coffy, Jason Correia, Jeremy Dobbins, Tony Falcone, Heath Jacobson, Jason Jerger, Nathan Kaiser, James Kenyon, Kyle Knaub, Jim Krutz, Brian Leahy, Nate Myers, Dylan Nelson, Trevor Pottorff, Tomm Roland, Al Rometo, Jeremy Spale and Jerrod Wood.

Tony welcomed those who attended the meeting and commented on the great turnout for the chapter meeting.  He also spoke about chapter elections, with 2006 being an election year and that, through the PAS national web site, we could do election voting online.  Those attending seemed to be in favor of doing elections this way.

It was decided that the deadline for nominations for the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer were to be submitted by June 1, 2006.  Nominations would be submitted to Tony, who would then set up the election online for the chapter.  The deadline to vote was determined to be July 1, 2006 and the elected officers would serve a 3-year term.

Chapter treasurer Jim Krutz reported that prior to the DoP, the chapter had an $842.25 balance in its account.  PAS gave the chapter an $800 grant and Dietze Music was donating $150 towards the DoP.

Next, the chapter newsletter was discussed.  It is still the intent to try and release a biennial newsletter with a goal of producing one quarterly.  One was released recently, but due to the timing and close proximity to the DoP event (for which the newsletter was its primary focus), it was not published and sent out as a mailing as the newsletter is usually done.  It was posted to the chapter web site and circulated via other means.  After the DoP, a newsletter for hard copy publication will be written and disseminated.

As a chapter, we still seem to have more snail mail addresses than e-mail addresses.  We have been trying to increase the number of e-mail addresses.

An idea for newsletter content was to have a Q&A section included where chapter members can submit questions and have them answered by other chapter members such as Tony, Tomm, Jim, Al Rometo, or anyone that wishes to volunteer their time and knowledge.  It was also suggested that, while we would print these in the newsletter, we would also make sure to have the response back to the member asking the question to be immediate so as not to make them wait a while to get their question answered.

On a side discussion, Brian will make a link on the chapter web site to the PAS discussion forum, as that is also a wonderful resource to pose questions and find out other valuable information.  Brian will also look into creating a spot on the web site to submit questions for the Q&A.

The idea of publishing membership information on the web site for other members was discussed.  Concerns regarding SPAM and other kinds of information retrieval from non-members were brought up.  A possible idea of having this information in a password-protected area of the chapter web site was mentioned.  There will be an inquiry to PAS regarding this type of set-up.  Also, the question of the 5 MB space limit for what is hosted by PAS for chapter web space and if the chapter site can use the PAS address, but re-direct to another site in order to have more site space to work with will be asked as well.

Regarding chapter by-laws, Tony looked into this and found that none seems to currently exist.  A template for a starting point can be obtained from PAS and it was decided that the next incoming set of officers can work to put this together.  Also, the idea of a by-laws sub-committee was discussed and Tony and Jim both welcomed anyone in the chapter membership that was interested in being part of such a group.

Tomm will be hosting the next DoP at the UN-Omaha campus next year.  Tentative date set for the event is Saturday, March 10, 2007.

Also discussed was the idea of adding a third site to the rotation and that being one more in the western portion of the state.  Locations such as Grand Island, Kearney and Hastings were mentioned.  It was hoped that such a westward location could host the 2008 Nebraska DoP.

Another topic of discussion was that the chapter had both a booth and a clinic at NMEA this past year.  The possibility of having a booth at NSBA was also looked into, but due to the cost, the chapter has not had one there as of yet.

Respectfully submitted,
Brian Leahy
Secretary

Nebraska Percussive Arts Society

Meeting  #4 minutes

Saturday, March 5th, 2005

Present were Tomm Roland, Brian Leahy, Richard Jones, Sean Jones, Sarah Lorimor and Alex Weigger.

Tomm welcomed those who attended the meeting and introduced Brian Leahy as the ad-hoc secretary until the next chapter elections in 2006. Previously, Jim Krutz performed the duties of treasurer and secretary for the chapter. Tomm explained that the positions are for 3 years and that PAS is working on possibly having chapter elections take place via the web.

In Jim’s absence, Tomm reported that prior to the DoP, the chapter had approximately $1,200 in its account.

Tomm announced that the chapter is looking to put out a newsletter – bi-annually at first, eventually on a quarterly basis – and that the next one should be released within the next month. He asked for ideas and content to be submitted for inclusion in the newsletter.

Chapter membership was discussed next. Tomm stated that currently, membership is small and the database is not up-to-date. He also stated that the chapter has more ‘snail mail’ addresses on file than ‘e-mail’ addresses and would like to work to get more detailed member information. Attendees suggested ways to get the word out and bolster chapter membership:

The idea of publishing membership information on the web site for other members was discussed. Concerns regarding SPAM and other kinds of information retrieval from non-members were brought up. A possible idea of having this information in a password-protected area of the chapter web site was mentioned. There will be an inquiry to PAS regarding this type of set-up. Also, the question of the 5 MB space limit for what is hosted by PAS for chapter web space and if the chapter site can use the PAS address, but re-direct to another site in order to have more site space to work with will be asked as well.

During the discussion of increasing chapter membership, the question was asked if PAS would subsidize the cost of an NSBA booth. This will be looked into.

Tomm stated that Tony Falcone is working on hosting the 2006 DoP in Lincoln, possibly at UN-L, depending on availability. For other and future locations, Concordia was mentioned as an option. Brian Leahy brought up the idea that since the DoP is usually held earlier in the year, to possibly hold another event later in the year for a central or western location within the state. Brian stated that by doing so, it might help increase chapter membership and interest in those areas of Nebraska.

Other topics of discussion were:

Web site and newsletter

Future DoP’s and clinics – what do you want to see? Artists? Locations?

Tomm announced that the budget for today’s DoP was approximately $4,000. This included advertising, donations and raffles. The last DoP in 2003 made money, the 2005 DoP was more expensive. National gave $500 this year. The average is usually $300. National likes to see what is planned as far as how much they will give a chapter towards their DoP.

The creation of committees and sub-committees to help get things done. This would provide more input and collaboration from membership.

Executive Committee needs to meet more often.

Question was raised regarding DoP admission: What if someone only wanted to go to a clinic or two, lower cost option? A ½ day event price? For those attending in groups (such as schools) – group/bulk discount to the DoP?

To help increase membership – contact bandmasters; get an ad or article into the NMEA magazine. All-state, NMEA presentation or booth. Possibly a sectional clinic/session. All-state percussion ensemble?

Brian Leahy
Secretary

Nebraska Percussive Arts Society

Meeting  #3 minutes

Tuesday, January 28th, 2003

Present were Tony Falcone, Tomm Roland, and Jim Krutz.

Tomm reported that NPAS was granted matching fund from the AFM Music Performance Trust Fund in the amount of $76.20 to assist in funding local artists at the March 1st DOP.

Jim reported that a check to match that $76.20 was sent to AFM in Omaha.  The MPTF will then send a check out to Tomm for the full amount.

Jim reported that NPAS no longer has a $3 monthly service charge on our account and that after the MPTF check deduction our balance stands at $386.60.

Tomm reported on the upcoming DOP in Omaha on March 1st.  Discount admission coupons will be available at JD Music in Omaha and at all Dietze Music House locations in Lincoln and Omaha.

Tomm asked that we begin to compile a list of area drum and percussion teachers.

Tony agreed to contact PASHQ in Lawton to request the PAS display for use at our March DOP and NSBA convention.

Jim will be unavailable to attend the March 1st DOP and Tomm agreed to find someone else to take minutes at the noon meeting that day.

Discussion was held on a chapter newsletter.  It needs to be a hard copy newsletter sent out at least twice each year.   This would enable us to stay in touch with membership that does not have regular access to the web site and mailing in late August and late January would facilitate the timely promotion of fall and spring percussion events.

Jim agreed to work on a mailing to be sent out prior to the DOP in March.

Discussion was held on the 2004 DOP site.  Tony indicated a possible site option in Lincoln and will look into its feasibility.  UNL is unavailable for a 2004 DOP event site.  It was agreed that we would like to announce the 2004 event site and date at the March DOP.

Discussion was held regarding how often chapter meetings should be held.  We agreed that it would be good to have a chapter meeting in conjunction with the DOP each spring and that is would also be good to have meetings at the NMEA convention in November and the NSBA convention in March.  These last two convention meetings would help NPAS reach out to Nebraska music educators and promote the benefits of PAS.

NPAS board meetings such as this one are open to any NPAS members interested in attending.

Tony reported on the access of free trial e-PAS online memberships to students enrolled in percussion teaching methods classes.  Information is available by contacting PASHQ in Lawton.

Respectfully submitted,
Jim Krutz
Secretary

Chapter meeting  #1 minutes

Saturday, September 14th, 2002

On September 14th, 2002, at the Concordia University Day of Percussion, a Nebraska PAS chapter lunch meeting was held at noon.  Members present at the meeting included Steven Raybine from Omaha, Tony Falcone from Lincoln (UNL), Tomm Roland from Omaha (UNO), Jim Krutz from Seward (Concordia University), and Nicole Wallen-Thompson, a UNL student from Lincoln.  Also present for a portion of the discussion was a reporter for channel 10/11 news who was doing a story on the Day of Percussion.

The purpose of this meeting was to report new executive board member election results and meet with Nebraska PAS members interested in leadership roles.

Chapter president Dr. Steve Raybine opened the meeting with a brief summary of the known history of the chapter and reported election results to the group.  Including all returned ballots, final tallies indicated the majority for president going to Tony Falcone.  Tomm Roland agreed to serve in the role of vice president.  Jim Krutz agreed to serve in the role of treasurer/secretary/historian.

Dr. Raybine was thanked for his years of service to Nebraska PAS and encouraged to remain active in the chapter.

The group brainstormed on ways we could promote PAS in Nebraska, actively involve the current chapter membership, and grow new membership in the chapter.

Plans were made to secure booth space at the upcoming November NMEA convention in Lincoln.

Tomm Roland agreed to set up a Nebraska chapter web site and host it until it could be based on the national PAS server.

We discussed having an annual day of percussion hosted at different sites each year.  Tomm will be hosting the NPAS chapter Day of Percussion in March 2003 at UNO.

Tony, Tomm, and Jim all plan to attend PASIC in November.  Tomm will be performing with his group Conundrum during the Wednesday afternoon program.

Meeting  #2 minutes

Tuesday, December 10th, 2002

Members present included Tony Falcone, Tomm Roland, and Jim Krutz.  Also attending was Scott Schinbara, a student from UNO.

Tony, Tomm, and Jim reported on PASIC.  Tony attended 2 meetings for state chapter presidents.  Tomm also attended a chapter president meeting dealing with chapter web sites.  Jim attended 2 executive board meetings as an observer and was a logistics volunteer for the convention.

Tomm reported on preparations for the Day of  Percussion he will host at UNO  on March 1st 2003.

Tony will be presenting at the NSBA convention (March 6-8) at UNL.  We agreed that it would be good to have a PAS display there.  Perhaps using the same display from PAS that we use for the DOP at UNO.

Tony will contact Lawton to arrange this.

Tony reported on our booth at NMEA.  He also made a pitch for PAS at the collegiate CMENC meeting.

Tomm reported on the NPAS web site.  It is up and running and currently based at www.tommroland.com.

Discussion was held on getting a hard copy newsletter out before the March DOP to promote the web site and upcoming events.

Tony reported on Continuing Professional Education credits that could be available for attending percussion clinics like those offered at PASIC.
