DAY OF PERCUSSION 2008    SPRING VALLEY HS

The Mabel Hoggard Drumming Ensemble, under the direction of Cathy Ameling, greeted the festival participants with the sounds of West African and Caribbean rhythms.  Performing along with tracks from the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band, drummer Bernie Dresel (Brian Setzer Orchestra) stressed the fundamentals of pulse, time and groove. The Vegas Vanguard Drumline gave a high-powered indoor drumline demonstration that had the audience on its feet. Sabian Cymbals’ Andy Zildjian talked about the process of cymbal making and took questions from the audience.  The headlining event of the day was the premiere performance of the Las Vegas Marimba Orchestra — a group of over 50 musicians that recreated the sound of the Musser Mass Marimba bands of the 1940s.  The group was conducted by Dr. Tim Jones and had special guests Ronnie Vannucci and Bill Kemnitz
