Andy Narell to visit, tour with Miami University Steel Band

This spring, internationally renowned pan artist and composer Andy Narell will be in residence at Miami University for three weeks. During this time, he will not only join the ensemble for their on-campus concerts, but also for a series of performances at high school and college venues across four states.

The MU Steel Band will perform music from Narell’s two recent recordings of steel band music, The Passage and Tatoom, along with other repertoire, including original compositions and arrangements by director Chris Tanner. Most of the performances in this series occur at high schools with steel band programs, and as such the performances will be collaborative.

The highlight of the entire experience will be a concert in Morgantown, West Virginia on the campus of West Virginia University on Thursday, April 10. At this event, a tribute concert for Ellie Mannette, three steel bands (Miami U, Eastern Kentucky U, and West Virginia U) along with Andy and Jeff Narell, will perform the entire concert together, in “mass band” fashion. MU Steel Band director Chris Tanner estimates there will be 70 sets of pans on stage at once, surely one of the largest steel band concerts ever to occur on U.S. soil.

Ellie Mannette, one of the key innovators of the steel band art form in 1940s-50s Trinidad, has been an artist-in-residence at West Virginia University since the early 1990s. All of the participants, including Andy and Jeff, who as young boys in the 1960s met Ellie in New York City, are looking forward to the opportunity to honor Mannette with this concert presentation.

The entire list of performances appears below. Most events are ticketed, and contact information for each venue is provided. Don’t miss the chance to see Andy Narell and the MU Steel Band at a city near you!
