The Day of Percussion is this weekend, Saturday, April 5, 8:30am to 7:00pm. This year we are at Flint Hill School’s Upper School, the West Campus.
Directions:
Upper School (West Campus) 3320 Jermantown Road - Oakton, Virginia 22124 From the Capital Beltway: Beltway (I-495) to I-66 West. Continue to Route 123 North (Exit 60). Turn left at light onto Jermantown Road. Follow Jermantown Road through first traffic light. School entrance is on the right.

Dom Famularo has been traveling the
globe preaching the gospel of drumming for
over 30 years. An intense performer, Dom is
one of the most respected solo drum artists
in the world, with a career built solely upon
his unique skills as a drummer and
motivational speaker. He has presented
masterclasses and clinics around the globe.
He has directed and emceed major
drumming expos around the world, and has
been one of
drumming' s most sought-after private
instructors for over 30 years. Students
regularly fly in from around the globe for
intensive study with Dom. A major player in
the percussion industry, Dom acts as
Education Director and consultant for
Sabian Cymbals and Vic Firth Sticks for
whom he oversees programs worldwide. He
also works and supervises the Learning
Advantage Program of Mapex
drums. Currently Dom continues to travel
intensively while working on several drum
products as well as his forthcoming
motivational book.

Michael Burritt is one of the world's
leading percussion soloists. He has
performed on four continents and nearly
forty states. He is in frequent demand
performing concert tours and master classes.
Mr. Burritt has three solo recordings -Perpetual, Shadow Chasers, and Waking Dreams on the Resonator Records label. He
has recently been appointed to the faculty of
the Eastman School of Music where he will
begin his position as Professor of Percussion
in the fall of 2008. Michael is only the third
percussion professor in the history of the
Eastman School. Mr. Burritt is currently
Professor and Director of Percussion Studies
in the School of Music at Northwestern
University where he has developed a
program of international distinction. Mr.
Burritt received his Bachelor and Master of
Music Degrees, as well as the prestigious
Performers Certificate from the Eastman
School of Music in Rochester, New York.
His teachers have included John Beck,
Gordon Stout, Paul Yancich and Herbert

Rebecca Kite has been performing as a
marimba soloist for over twenty years,
appearing in concert and in clinics across the
United States, and around the world. Her
current program includes transcriptions of
classical guitar music by Giuliani, Sor, Bach
and Dowland in addition to music based on
African, Serbian and Japanese folk melodies
by Kakraba Lobi, Nebojsa Zivcovic and
Keiko Abe. She recently published a book
about Keiko Abe, Keiko Abe~A Virtuosic Life: Her Musical Career and the Evolution of the Concert Marimba

World percussionist N. Scott Robinson is
an eclectic and engaging musician suitable
for a wide range of audiences, from
university appearances to concert halls. He
blends his background in jazz and classical
music with detailed studies of various world
musics. Scott brings a wealth of experience
to the performing stage with a style of music
that is both widely accessible and artistically
rich. His vocal and multi-instrumental
performances typically feature him on the
riq (Arabic tambourine), bodhran (Irish
frame drum that he plays with Indian and
Persian hand techniques), sanza (finger
piano from Central Africa), berimbau
(Brazilian musical bow), hindewhu (Central
African pygmy whistle), and Tuvan
overtone singing.

Project Percussion
Project Percussion is scheduled for
Friday, April 11, 2008, 3:00 pm to
9:00pm, at Midlothian High School, 401
Charter Colony Parkway,
Midlothian,VA. Coordinator, Chris
Thomas, say it is a Day of Percussion
Music Education! Special guests are
VCU Percussion Ensemble, US Army
Drum and Bugle Corps, and Longwood
University Percussion Ensemble. There
will also be raffles, a fastest hands
competition, and full concessions.

Drumfest! 2008 A Huge Success!
Congratulations to David Salisbury, VA/DC
PAS Drumfest! Coordinator, for organizing
another wonderful event. The third annual
VA/DC PAS Drumfest! Student Drumset
Competition for the best up-and-coming Jr
and Intermediate Drummers was held on
Saturday, January 5, 2008, at Saunders
Middle School in Woodbridge Virginia.
Middle and high school drummers competed
for trophies and awards. Clinicians were Harold Summey and Tony Mart ucci. It
was well attended.

Nathan Daughteryat James Madison

Nathan Daughtery, composer and solo
marimbist, will be in residence at JMU
April 18 – 21st. He will present a master
class Friday and perform with the
university percussion ensemble Sunday
at 3:00pm and Monday at 8:00 pm. Both
concerts will be held in room 108 of the
Music Building on the JMU campus. Dr.
Daughtery will perform David
Gillingham’s new work, “Concerto for
Marimba and Percussion Orchestra.” His
performances have taken him across the
United States, Eastern Europe, and
Japan. He has appeared as featured
soloist with the Slovak Radio Symphony
Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony,
and several university orchestras across
the U.S. His first CD, “Spiral Passages”
was released in 2001 and featured
original and transcribed works for solo
marimba, as well as accompanied works.
Nathan’s performance of McCarthy’s“WarHammer” from his CD was
recently featured on National Public
Radio’s All Songs Considered program.
Dr. Daughtery’s performance is made
possible with generous support from the
Virginia chapter of PAS, Vic Firth
Sticks and Mallets, Yamaha
Corporation, C. Alan Publishing and
Friends and Alumni of the Percussion
Studio.
Chapter Election
No new nominations for chapter office
were received. The current officers have
agreed to serve an additional term. The
election will be certified at the next
chapter meeting at the Day of Percussion
on April 5, 2008.
Message from the President
Our premier event, The Day of Percussion is quickly approaching. I want to
thank Kristopher Keeton for his efforts in getting Michael Burrit for a return
visit to one of our DOPs. It will be a great Day. We will have groups from
many regions within our chapter. I also want to recognize Day of Percussion
Coordinator, Debbie Anderson, for her tireless efforts to collect doorprizes.
Thanks to Debbie, the industry support looks like it will be strong as ever;
which means lots of door prizes!
