Contrary Motion/Contrasting Meters by Terry O'Mahoney
This timpani exercises (for four drums) was inspired by Elliot Carter's works for timpani. The hands are moving in contrary motion. The right hand is implying 3/4 time while the left hand creates a feeling of 5/8 time underneath it. (The last quarter note in the left hand is not part of the 5/8 phrase but is required to "turn the exercise around" so that it may begin on beat one of the first bar.) The challenge is to maintain the integrity of each meter.
