For Immediate Release: April 18, 2005
Duncan High School Senior Larry Camp was recently selected to receive the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) Don Glasby Memorial Scholarship. Camp is the second recipient of the scholarship that honors the memory of Don Glasby, a popular local jazz drummer, long-time PAS member and favorite weekend host at the Percussive Arts Museum.
The scholarship was awarded to Camp on April 17 by Percussive Arts Museum Curator Otice Sircy and Bobbie Glasby, Don Glasby's widow. The presentation was made before a capacity crowd at the Percussive Arts Museum in Lawton prior to a concert by Apocalypso Now, the Texas Tech University Steel Drum Band. Also in attendance was Bobbie Glasby's sister, Mabel Eakle, who was visiting from Phoenix, Ariz.
The annual scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior in the Lawton area to assist his or her college education. The student must be a percussionist or drummer participating in his or her school music program and also must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, citizenship and contribution to the community.
Camp has been the Duncan High School band drumline captain for two years, and has played in the school's jazz band, winter drumline and percussion ensemble. He was also selected for the 2004 OMEA All State Jazz Band and has received superior ratings in several music competitions. He was a member of the orchestra for the Duncan Little Theatre's production of "Red, Hot and Cole."
In addition to music, Camp has been involved in student government, the student newspaper, student council blood drives, French Club, Key Club, and is a private pilot student. He serves as the director for a capella congregational singing at Southside Church of Christ and operates his own lawn care business.
Camp plans to attend LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, where he will major in aeronautical science.
Funding for the PAS Don Glasby Memorial Scholarship is provided by memorial donations and an annual benefit concert event each fall.
