Oct. 2 Concert to Benefit PAS
Don Glasby Memorial Scholarship
The Percussive Arts Museum will
host The Brothers Dupree for the third annual PAS Don
Glasby Memorial Scholarship Benefit Concert at 3 p.m.,
Sunday, Oct. 2. The museum is located at 701 NW Ferris
Ave., Lawton, behind the McMahon Memorial Auditorium.
A suggested $5 donation per person will be collected
at the door.
The Brothers Dupree will perform a variety of songs
by artists such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, David
Sanborn, Van Morrison and Stanley Turrentine. Band
members are Danny Cox (keyboard), Denny Baker (drums),
Mike Minton (guitar, sax, flute), and Q (bass). The
band recently was named “Favorite Local Band” in
the Lawton Constitution People’s Choice Awards.
The versatile group stays busy performing a mix of
classic rock, R&B and jazz at local clubs, receptions,
festivals and events in Southwestern Oklahoma.
Cox, Baker, Minton and Q were very good friends and
fans of Glasby and his band The Hi Tones, and they
are donating their talents to help raise funds for
the scholarship.
“Don was a great musical inspiration to all
of us and has left a lasting impression on us,” said
Cox.
The scholarship was created in 2003 to honor the memory
of Glasby, who was deeply involved in the Lawton community
and was recognized throughout the region as an exceptional
drummer and musician. He was a long-time member of
the Percussive Arts Society and a favorite weekend
host at the Percussive Arts Museum.
The annual scholarship is awarded to a graduating
senior in the Lawton area to assist his or her college
education. The student must be a percussionist or drummer
participating in his or her school music program and
also must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement,
citizenship and contribution to the community.
Funding for the PAS Don Glasby Memorial Scholarship
is provided by memorial donations and the annual benefit
concert each fall.
