Percussive Arts Museum to Host
Feb. 12 'Music for Percussion and Electronics' Concert

Percussion artist and composer J.B. Smith will present
a free public concert featuring “Music for Percussion
and Electronics” at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 12 at
the Percussive Arts Museum. The performance will include
a rich variety of percussion instruments and sounds.
The museum is located at 701 NW Ferris Ave., Lawton,
overlooking Elmer Thomas Park.
Dr. Smith is a professor of music and the coordinator
of percussion studies at Arizona State University.
He has performed and recorded with Ensemble 21, The
Daniel Lentz Group, Summit Brass and the Phoenix Symphony.
He has recorded for Summit, Fontec, Rhizome Sketch,
Leo, Koch, Centaur, Whole>Sum and Canyon Records.
He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree
from Baylor University where he studied with Dr. Larry
Vanlandingham, his Master of Music in Percussion Performance
and Literature degree from the University of Illinois
where he studied with Professor Thomas Siwe and his
Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of
North Texas where he studied with Dr. Robert Schietroma.
He has written articles for The Instrumentalist, Percussive
Notes, American Music Teacher and The Canadian Band
Journal. Dr. Smith is active as a composer, with numerous
works published by Whole>Sum Productions. In 1995,
he hosted the Percussive Arts Society International
Convention (PASIC) in Phoenix, Arizona. He has also
served as president of the Arizona chapter of PAS.
This performance is part of the Percussive Arts Museum
Concert Series, sponsored by the National Endowment
for the Arts, Oklahoma Arts Council, City of Lawton
and the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council. Dr. Smith’s
appearance is sponsored by the Arizona State University
School of Music, Pearl Drums, Adams Percussion, Zildjian
Cymbals and Mike Balter Mallets.
