The Percussive Arts Museum will host a special performance of two world-class marimba and vibraphone artists at 8 p.m., Friday, March 10. The duo Dan & Daniella is stopping in Lawton as part of a four-state tour. The free concert will include music from jazz to classical to contemporary. Bulgarian born Daniella Ganeva and American Dan Moore, both internationally known musicians, combine forces in a trans-continental musical merger that promises to be a rare opportunity to hear two accomplished musicians from different musical and cultural backgrounds joining forces to create a new musical voice. Ganeva is a classically trained musician who champions contemporary music, while Moore is known for his work in jazz and ethnic music. Together they generate a repertoire that defies classification in an elegant evening of distinctive music for melodic percussion. The program will include music from their individual solo repertoire, as well as compositions and arrangements created specially for Dan & Daniella, including “3-Minute Heat Wave,” “The Poets of Andalucia,” “Besame Mucho,” and others. “We are very excited to host two of the world’s top keyboard percussionists here in Lawton for this free community concert,” said Percussive Arts Society Executive Director Michael Kenyon. “It will be an interesting mix of styles and sounds with something for anyone who enjoys hearing music performed by master artists.” Dan & Daniella’s performance is sponsored by Yamaha, Innovative Percussion, Sabian, Latin Percussion, Mike Balter and Grover Pro Percussion. The Percussive Arts Museum is located at 701 NW Ferris Ave., Lawton, behind the McMahon Memorial Auditorium on Elmer Thomas Park. A winner of international music competitions, she is today a highly sought after solo marimba artist, giving performances and master classes worldwide. Daniella often commissions new works and has given many world premier performances (most recently of the new concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra by the Latvian composer Rihards Dubra, broadcast live on television and radio). Last year’s highlights included performances in Poland, Bulgaria, Denmark, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and her fourth performance at Europe’s most prestigious percussion festival, London’s Rhythm Sticks. Broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3, BBC World Service and ClassicFM and with three successful solo CDs, Daniella is much in demand as a recording artist, making guest appearances on numerous albums. Regarded as an expert in her field, Daniella has performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC), USA, and has been featured in TV documentaries on percussion. She is currently featured on the Global Music Network website (www.gmn.com), where you can see interviews and hear excerpts from her most recent CD “Rush.” Daniella is sponsored by Mike Balter Mallets, Sabian and Grover Pro Percussion. DAN MOORE A native Texan, born and raised in Longview, Dan Moore received his undergraduate degree in music education from East Texas State University, where he served as a student assistant to James F. Keene and studied percussion with Robert Houston. He earned the master's of music education from Wichita State University, where he studied with J.C. Combs; and a doctor of musical arts degree from The University of Kentucky, where he completed his doctoral fellowship under the auspices of James B. Campbell. Today he is percussion area head at the University of Iowa. A "total percussionist," his experience in the many aspects of percussion — keyboard, drumset, ethnic, multi and electronic — ranges from concert to marching and from jazz to classical. Moore has performed throughout the United States, and in Japan and China. His interest in electronic percussion led to his development of the MIDI-marimba, which augments the acoustic marimba with electronically triggered sounds. In 1985, he formed the Britain/Moore Duo with Nashville-based steel drummer and percussionist Mat Britain. Their most recent CD, “Little World of Rhythm” (Cricket City 2001), was described by a reviewer as having “a musical spirit that lifts the soul.” Moore has presented performances and clinics at the prestigious Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) with The Britain/Moore Duo, DigiJam and first-call Nashville studio percussionist Tom Roady, and others. He is a national performing artist for Yamaha Corporation of America, Innovative Percussion and Sabian Ltd. He serves on the Latin Percussion Music Group (LP) Educational Advisory Board. His music is published by Cricket City Music, Innovative Percussion and Creative Music.
