Michael Bookspan died on Sept. 12. He was
the Principal Percussionist and Associate Timpanist with the Philadelphia
Orchestra and was on the faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music.
He studied with Fred Albright, Morris Goldenberg, and Saul Goodman
and graduated from the Juilliard School of Music. While still in
school, Bookspan worked with the Little Orchestra Society of New
York and the New York City Ballet. Upon graduation, he joined the
Philadelphia Orchestra, with whom he was featured several times
as soloist, playing marimba, xylophone, and in 1993 performing
a percussion concerto written for him by Robert Suderburg.
