Percussionist,
author and teacher Richard D. Paul died
on March 27, 2003, at age 70 after a long battle with cancer.
Richard was president
and director of the Paul-Mueller Percussion Studio of Indianapolis,
Indiana's largest private teaching facility. It was
started in 1958 with his longtime friend and partner Dr.
Erwin C. Mueller, and with their leadership grew to 250 percussion
students taught each week with six full-time teachers.
Paul was Principal Percussionist with the Indianapolis Symphony
Orchestra for ten years and was a founding member of the
Indianapolis Percussion Ensemble with
Mueller and Dr. James Moore. During the early 1960s Richard was co-founder of Percussive
Notes magazine along with Mueller and Moore, publishing the magazine for
five years before it became the official publication of the newly formed Percussive
Arts Society.
In addition to his teaching at the Paul-Mueller Studios he was Professor of Percussion
at Indiana State University and Ball State University for over 30 years. He authored
many instruction books, solos and ensembles for junior high and high school students.
Along with Mueller, he co-authored the Rules and Adjudication Manual for Percussion
for the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA).
A tireless worker, Richard headed the Midwest Percussion Camp at Indiana University
Bloomington, Ball State University and Marian College Indianapolis. He was a
member of PAS, the National Association of Music Teachers, Pi Kappa Lambda, and
a life member of American Federation of Musicians Local 3.
His expertise and dedication touched thousands of students throughout his life
as a teacher, as he was still teaching a week prior to his passing. He will be
missed dearly by the percussion community..
