The Percussive Arts Society (PAS) is excited to announce a brand new drumset competition for artists between the ages of 14 and 22. The purpose of the contest is to encourage and support young musical drumset artists, with emphasis on the performer’s ability to support and guide a small band.

COMPETITION INFORMATION

Purpose:

To recognize the most musical young drumset artists, with emphasis on the performer’s ability to support and guide a small band.

Competition Categories:
Two age divisions will include 14–17 years of age at time of entry deadline (May 15, 2010), and 18–22 years of age at time of entry deadline (May 15, 2010).

Participation Fee:
$35.00 (US Dollars)

Awards:
Two finalists will be selected from each age category in each style category for a total of 12 finalists. All finalists will compete at the 2010 Percussive Arts Society International Convention (November 10-13) in Indianapolis, IN. Winners from each style category and age division will receive $1,000. Selected finalists will have their PASIC registration fee waived and are responsible for covering all other financial commitments (room, board, travel).

Procedures:
1. Send PAS a DVD video no longer than 6 minutes that follows the performance guidelines below. DVD should be clearly marked with your name, age and style category.

2. Submit your application to the Percussive Arts Society by 5/15/2010 in one of the following ways:
     Submit your application information and participation fee online (DVD still needs to be postmarked by 5/15/2010 to the Percussive Arts Society).
     OR
     Download a PDF application form and mail in with the DVD and participation fee.

3. All completed applications will be evaluated and all contestants will receive comments by a panel of judges via email.

Video Requirements:
1. Chose only one style category from the following:
     1. R&B/Funk/Gospel
     2. Jazz
     3. Brazilian/Afro-Cuban/African

2. Video must include live musicians with a maximum of eight players including contestant and must not exceed 6 minutes in length.

3. Video must include a drumset solo with the following guidelines:
     a. Jazz category: soloing must be trading 4’s or 8’s with band members (maximum two choruses).
     b. Other style categories: must solo over an ensemble vamp (maximum of 64 measures).

Disqualification will occur if the video is not postmarked by 5/15/2010, exceeds 6 minutes, the contestant does not stay within the style category of their choice, the number of musicians exceeds 8 players, the drum solo does not fit the prescribed guidelines, the video has been edited in any way, and if any of the music on the video is not “live” (i.e. no computer sequenced music). PAS reserves the right to cancel any style category if the quality of performances or number of entries does not meet our standards.

The preferred video format is mp4.

DVD Videos should be postmarked by May 15, 2010 and sent to the address below. DVD should be clearly marked with applicant's name, age and style category.

All judges for the drumset competition are professional artists and considered masters of their musical style. Preliminary and final judges are subject to change without notice.
