Peart Growth RingsDRUM WORKSHOP
Short Film Narrated by Neil Peart
In 2015, when Drum Workshop Inc. (DW) began working with Edge Factor to create the Masters of Resonance documentary, Neil Peart was rehearsing for Rush’s final R40 tour in the on-site Drum Channel studio. A chance introduction between the film’s writer/producer (and fellow Canadian) Jeremy Bout and Peart resulted in the short film Growth Rings. Written and narrated by the revered drummer and wordsmith, it chronicles the importance of music in marking key life moments and historic milestones.

Since its quiet release in June 2020, this vivid and thoughtful reflection on the importance of music has struck a chord with many people and is fast becoming a viral internet sensation. Its prescient and measured tones resonate in a world that is full of uncertainty and challenges, and as Peart reminds everyone, music is “the weather of its time” embodying “the moods and movements that gave it context,” just like the growth rings of a tree. Peart reminds us that “communal music has the power to bring people together, to inspire and reinforce their shared beliefs.”

Global Vice President of Marketing Scott Donnell comments, “This project was a labor of love. It’s an inspiring message that means so much to so many in these turbulent times. Neil was truly the Word Whisperer.”

Peart, known for his meticulous and intricate drum work, was also Rush’s primary lyricist and conceptual brainchild, adept at weaving his philosophic thoughts into many of the band’s catalog of critically acclaimed songs. The perceptive words of this short film will, like many of his song lyrics, become “milestones and eras of our lives” and “resonate with us during these times.”

Peart passed away in January 2020, after a lengthy battle with cancer, sending shockwaves through the music world and drumming community. Considered one of the best rock drummers in history, his legacy continues to echo through people’s lives because as he concludes in the film, “When you find that singular focus, the thing you were created to do, your art will take root.”

10 Years of Innovation Celebrated
Porter & Davies is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Over the course of the last decade the company behind the BC2, BC2rm, BC Gigster, BC-X, TT6 Equipped Thrones, and KT Platforms silent tactile monitoring systems has changed the way musicians around the world hear and play music.

In 2009, drummer Dil Davies was struggling to hear and feel the bass drum when Oysterband toured. After a show, he and sound engineer Tim Porter were talking and decided they needed to do something about it. Several months later Porter presented Davies with a prototype BC2, and every drummer he showed it to wanted it.  The system then developed rapidly with the creation of the patented seat design containing the transducer. In 2010 the two met Kevin Morris, drummer with Dr. Feelgood and the then UK DW Drum distributor. He helped Porter and Davies set up the brand, and over the next ten years they turned an idea born of necessity into a global sensation.

The company’s first product to market was the BC2, initially called the “BumChum.” This portable, easy-to-use unit changed the way drummers connected to their kit. For the first time they could accurately feel and hear what they played through bone conduction. This was quickly followed by the BC Gigster, featuring the same performance with reduced features and a more affordable price. In 2012, following requests from the drumming community, the rack mountable BC2rm was introduced. In 2015 the KT Platform arrived, which meant percussionists, bass players, guitarists, keyboard players, and DJs could stand and feel their own instrument or choose a mix from the monitor board.

Two years later the TT6 Equipped Throne joined the Porter & Davies product range followed soon after by the BC-X, a super mini version of the BC2 and BC Gigster.

These systems are used at home, in the studio, and on tour by top musicians around the world including drummers Omar Hakim, John Tempesta, Gavin Harrison, Kenny Aronoff, John JR Robinson, Matt Sorum, Zak Starkey, and Steve White.

It has been an exciting ten years for Porter & Davies, overcoming the challenges of starting a brand from scratch, evolving it to meet customer needs, and developing it to become the global leader in the silent tactile monitoring market. The men behind this musical revolution have now also begun T&D Design Labs to focus on applying bone-conduction technology to non-musical applications in fields such as medical therapy, helping people with hearing impairments, home cinema, and gaming.
