PDP Concept Hardware

Hardware Upgrade
Pacific Drums and Percussion (PDP) has re-engineered their complete line of hardware series, streamlining the ranges and redesigning over 30 stands and pedals for the cost-conscious drummer. The comprehensive range of durable hardware extends from the lightweight 700 series through to tour-ready Concept series heavy-duty stands, all designed incorporating road-tested features, a new PDP logo, and innovative solutions for players of every musical genre and skill level.

Lightweight and portable, the 700 Series hardware is perfect for local gigs, bop setups, rehearsal rooms, classrooms, and more. The upgraded series components are available as a 5-piece hardware pack or individually. The new features across this series include variable-position Glide Tilter, double-braced legs, anti-slip feet, new ergonomic wingnuts, and updated logos throughout, plus there are new 700 series pedals (single and double pedals, including lefty).

The notable difference in the upgraded medium-weight 800 series hardware is the two-tier boom cymbal stand that can also be converted into a straight stand. Other new pro-inspired features include Quick-Release wingnuts, lightweight composite memory locks on all of the tube joints, and oversized anti-slip rubber feet. All the pedals, including the hi-hat, feature the smooth cast footboard with integrated needle bearing hinges, and the new and improved 800 series pedals are dual chain with a concentric drive system for an ultra-smooth feel.

Completely redesigned is the tour-ready Concept Series hardware; heavy gauge steel tubing is now outfitted with robust hinged tube joints and the modular QuickGrip clamp system. Pro-features integrated include Leverage Ratchet Handles, Quick-Release cymbal wingnuts, removeable infinite tilters on the cymbal stands, lightweight composite memory locks, and oversized anti-slip rubber feet. Ball-and-socket basket adjustments are available on the double-braced dual tom and snare stands, and multi-position tension adjustments are included on both the two- and three-leg hi-hat stands. The Concept pedals now feature a new toe-clamp system, magnet drumkey, single posts on the chain and direct drive pedals, and DW Control Beaters on direct-drive models for ultimate customization of the beater feel.

Mike McIntosh Signature Sticks
ProMark Drumsticks recently partnered with Mike McIntosh, The Cavaliers Percussion Director and Music Coordinator, to design his new signature stick.

The Mike McIntosh Signature Drumstick features a large round tip that produces a full-bodied tone, while the additional length and extended taper provide a quick rebound for ease of playability and control. Additionally, Mike desired to create the most responsive snare stick that marching percussion has ever seen.

This Maribel White painted hickory stick with a large round wood tip measures .710 inches (18.03mm) in diameter and 17 inches (431.8mm) in length.

In addition to designing, coordinating, consulting, and composing for many marching bands all over the United States, McIntosh is the Percussion Coordinator for the Music for All Summer Symposium as well as the Percussion Caption Supervisor, Music Coordinator, and one of two Percussion Designers for The Cavaliers drum and bugle corps. From 1997–2011, McIntosh was a percussion specialist at Carmel High School in Indiana and an integral part of programs named the 2001 and 2017 AAA National Champion and 2005, 2012, 2016, and 2017 BOA Grand National Champions.

McIntosh is an active clinician and adjudicator, giving clinics throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia, having performed clinics in Japan and Beijing, China. Michael is a current adjudicator for WGI and Bands of America.

The new website has a number of new features. Simple drop-down menus and perfectly curated filters let users find exactly what they are looking for. Once they find that item, there are plenty of product images that they can zoom into, and the descriptions are detailed, so customers will know exactly what will be coming in the box.

Users can easily add products to their cart or click the "Buy it now" button to purchase immediately. And they can shop with the knowledge that their information is processed securely. RBI doesn't see, store, or have the ability to access any credit card info.

Vic Firth Mike JohnsonVIC FIRTH
Mike Johnston Custom Collaboration American Classic
The Avedis Zildjian Company, parent company of Vic Firth, announced the release of the Mike Johnston Custom Collaboration American Classic NE-1 sticks.

Mike Johnston partnered with Vic Firth to design a pair of sticks optimized with a longer taper for balance, a modified barrel tip for response, and a diameter between a 5A and 5B for comfort. Crafted with made-in-the-USA hickory wood, the American Classic NE-1 offers a strong tried-and-true composition.

“Mike Johnston is all about the little details,” says Vic Firth Global Brand Manager Mike Weber. “At Vic Firth, we share that appreciation for detail, so when we got together to design a new stick with Mike it really took things to a whole new level. As an educator, Mike wanted to create a stick that could get out of your way and let you focus on developing your skill behind the kit, something that wasn’t going to hold you back in making progress on your drumming journey. As soon as you get a pair of NE-1’s in your hands, you’ll feel the difference immediately.”

The Mike Johnston American Classic NE-1 sticks are available at, authorized dealers, and international distributor partners.

Vic Firth Nate SmithNate Smith Signature Series Stick
The Avedis Zildjian Company, parent company of Vic Firth, announced the release of the new Nate Smith Signature Series sticks.

For nearly two decades, Nate Smith has been impacting the music scene with his visceral, instinctive, and deep-rooted style of drumming. From jazz to fusion, R&B to hip-hop, from pop to rock, and everywhere in between, Nate Smith grooves like wind around the drum set. Now Nate brings that same energy and versatility to Vic Firth with his new Signature Series drumsticks.

Being slightly thinner than a 7A in the grip, with added length and a medium taper for a smooth response and impeccable balance, this stick is great for sitting right in the pocket. Crafted with made-in-the-USA hickory wood, the Nate Smith Signature Series sticks offer a strong, tried-and-true composition. The rounded barrel tip allows for articulation at any angle and lets you pull serious sound out of your cymbals.

“We are thrilled to welcome the talented and influential Nate Smith as the newest Vic Firth Signature Series artist,” says Vic Firth Global Brand Manager Mike Weber. “Nate is such a versatile and energetic player, and that versatility and effortless flow really comes to life in his new signature stick. Developing a new creative tool with an artist is always inspiring. Working with Nate was certainly no exception.”

The Nate Smith Signature Series sticks are available at, authorized dealers, and international distributor partners.

Vic Firth RUTE-XNew RUTE-X Rods
The Avedis Zildjian Company, parent company of Vic Firth, announces the new, breakthrough RUTE-X rods.

Vic Firth understands that the familiar feel of drumsticks is missing from traditional rod designs. The new RUTE-X rods offer the comfort, response, and balance of standard drumsticks while further improving on the volume control, versatility, and alternative sounds players look for in the perfect rods. Optimized rimshot and cross-sticking capability offer even greater dynamic sound control.

The Vic Firth RUTE-X rods come in four specialized models: light, medium, and heavy gauge premium birch, as well as a durable poly synthetic. Each includes an adjustable dowel band to tune your sound and feel, plus a made-in-the-USA hickory wood drumstick handle with a rich timeless walnut stain finish. The RUTE-X rods are the perfect cross between rods and sticks, and the “X” in the RUTE-X artwork design marks the spot where you get the perfect cross stick strike every time.

The RUTE-X light gauge rods feature 23 light-gauge, premium birch dowels that offer a softer touch and less volume and attack on drums and cymbals. The medium gauge rods have 11 medium-gauge premium birch dowels for a mid-range volume and attack on drums and cymbals. For more volume and a clearer attack on drums and cymbals, the heavy gauge rods sport 7 heavy-gauge premium birch dowels. The durable poly synthetic rods bring a warmer, more mellow sound on drums and cymbals with 10 durable synthetic poly dowels.

“RUTE-X rods are specifically designed to maintain the feel and balance of a drumstick while still providing drummers with an alternative sound as well as the ability to better control volume in settings like acoustic gigs, worship bands, studio sessions, or even while practicing,” says Vic Firth Global Brand Manager Mike Weber. “If you play with both sticks and traditional rods, these really allow you to get the best of both worlds and open up an even more creative playing experience.”

The RUTE-X rods are available at, authorized dealers, and international distributor partners.

Zildjian Raw CrashesZILDJIAN
FX Raw Crashes Available Globally
The Avedis Zildjian Company announced the wider release of their FX Raw crashes, available with large or small bell options.

FX Raw Crashes are the most unrefined and funky cymbals Zildjian has ever produced. No two Raw Crashes sound or look alike, which make them the ultimate cymbal to personalize a drummer’s setup.

Raw Crashes are not hammered or lathed, which gives each a highly irregular profile and an unrefined surface. They are also not trimmed into a perfect circle, resulting in odd shapes, sizes, and a naturally coarse edge. Altogether, these variations in profile, shape, size and edge consistency are what create the wildly individual sounds that make these cymbals so special. Available in small bell and large bell sizes, the Raw Crashes deliver a controlled and dry crash, ideal for moderate volume situations. Their dry character and well-defined stick sounds also make them a great choice for an alternative ride cymbal. The Small Bell Raw Crash delivers a more controlled sound with fewer overtones, whereas the Large Bell Raw Crash is more open with a very pronounced bell tone.

These unique FX Raw crashes, previously only available in the USA through the company’s online Concept Shop, are now available through Zildjian retailers worldwide.

Zildjian GongsNew Gongs, Gong Mallets, and Accessories
The Avedis Zildjian Company announced the release of new gongs, mallets, and accessories, including two sizes of Wind Gongs, a Gou Gong, and a Xiang Jia Gong.

Wind Gongs are traditional Chinese instruments for use in symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, drum corps, and meditative or ceremonial settings. Flat in profile with no rim, wind gongs are thin and extremely responsive, producing characteristically shimmering tones across a wide dynamic range. When struck softly, the wind gong resonates with a low drone, and can crescendo to deliver sounds that are sharp, explosive, bright, and splashy.

The new Zildjian Wind Gongs are available in 40-inch and 24-inch sizes. The 40-inch Wind Gong has a low pitch and the potential for power and projection. The 24-inch Wind Gong offers a high fundamental pitch and an intimate sound. Both sizes are available in two versions, the first featuring a black Zildjian logo on the front and back of the gong, the second features a small Zildjian logo etched into the front of the gong and a small black logo printed on the back. Both models come with a black hanging rope.

The new 17-inch Zildjian Gou Gong (sometimes called a Hmong Shaman gong) has a rich history and tradition of healing, being used as a medicinal tool. This instrument is heavy and thick with a turned edge, and produces warm tones that are clear and linear, with less spread and overtones than traditional chao or wind gongs. Gou Gongs produce a higher fundamental pitch with shorter sustain, which can be stretched into longer sustained notes through repeated strokes. Their lower-volume sounds make them best suited for use in smaller ensembles and more intimate performance spaces. The Zildjian Gou Gong features a small Zildjian logo etched into the front of the gong and a small black logo printed on the back of the gong, with a black hanging rope.

Finally, the new 20-inch Zildjian Xiang Jia Gong stands out first in design. Featuring unlathed bronze, this gong has a beautiful, natural look, with a subtle geometric pattern across its playing surface. Its raw finish coupled with deeper rims results in rich, enveloping tones, suitable for orchestra, chamber music, and meditative settings. Its sonic characteristics do not lend it to thunderous effects like other gongs, but rather warmer tones that resonate with arresting presence. Xiang Jia gongs can produce a deep sound, as well as clearer, higher-pitched tones, depending on the mallet size used. This Xiang Jia Gong features a small Zildjian logo etched into the front of the gong and a small black logo printed on the back of the gong, with a black hanging rope.

On the accessory front, the new Zildjian Heavy Duty Gong Stand is a sturdy, high-quality metal stand with heavy-duty rolling casters. This highly functional stand includes hooks on both sides to hang mallets, rotating caster wheels with locks, and a smooth black coated finish. Constructed from rectangular tube steel, this stand is surprisingly lightweight and easy to move, and fits gongs up to 40-inches in diameter.

The company is also introducing a selection of new Zildjian Gong Mallets. The Zildjian General Gong Mallet is yarn-wrapped in a large diamond shape and is most suited for playing gongs in a range of 20- to 40-inches in size. With a length of 17.5 inches, a head diameter of 3.8 inches, and a handle made of U.S. select hickory, it is an all-around balanced mallet for gong playing. General strokes will easily pull more volume out of smaller gongs, and the mallet allows for great control and nuance when playing larger sizes. This mallet comes with lanyard strap for hanging on a gong stand.

The Zildjian Gong Rollers are designed for sustaining long notes on a gong, whether quieter, low-pitched drones that rumble beneath the orchestra or ensemble, or crescendos that build to sharp, explosive accents. Rollers are yarn-wrapped in a large diamond shape and come in lighter maple for easy movement around the face of the gong. Shorten your stroke with a single mallet, or quickly warm up the instrument with two. These mallets are sold in pairs. Mallet length is 14-1/4 inches with a head diameter of 3 inches.

The Zildjian Wind Gong Mallet is an ideal mallet choice for lighter playing when the music calls for a more delicate sound. A thinner diameter than the General gong mallet, this mallet can create splashes on smaller size gongs, and thinner, more articulate sounds on larger sizes or gongs with deeper profiles. Wind Gong mallets are yarn-wrapped, with a handle made from U.S. select hickory for excellent balance. Length is 15-1/4 inches with a head diameter of 2 inches.

Zildjian Reflexx PadsConditioning Pads Launched in Partnership with Reflexx
The Avedis Zildjian Company announced a partnership with Reflexx to launch co-branded Zildjian Reflexx Conditioning Pads.

Ideal for low-volume practice, the Zildjian Reflexx pad offers two playing surfaces designed to bring aspects of both high and low bounce surfaces together with a specific density, hardness, and thickness that allows for a more holistic practice experience when away from the drums.

The FLEXX surface offers medium resistance, while the WORKK surface has a higher resistance with less rebound. These two unique playing surfaces are designed to complement and supplement each other to specifically enhance muscle conditioning and help strengthen arm, wrist, and finger muscles. Importantly, the surfaces transmit much less shock to the stick, hand, wrist, and arm, thus lessening vibration-based fatigue.

The Zildjian Reflexx Conditioning Pads will be available in 10-inch and 6-inch sizes, matching the same quality and workmanship associated with the existing Reflexx product.
