EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Centennial Celebration
The Eastman School of Music, of the University of Rochester, officially began its Centennial Celebration July 1, 2021. Their 100 years of history and 18-month-long celebration will include more than 50 new compositions, world premieres, and centennial fanfares written specifically for Eastman’s ensembles, Eastman’s illustrious faculty, and more.

The incredible “Who’s Who” list of composers who have received centennial commissions includes some of the most prominent names in contemporary American music, and two Pulitzer Prize winners. Several composers are current Eastman faculty members.

These premieres and commissions include over 40 performances that will be premiered by many Eastman ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, Eastman Philharmonia Orchestra, Musica Nova, Trombone Choir, Chorale, Saxophone Project, Jazz Ensemble, New Jazz Ensemble, Double-Reed Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Treble Chorus, Wind Orchestra, New Horizon Band, numerous ensembles in the Eastman Community Music School, and more.

In addition, Eastman alumni composers created 14 fanfares especially for Eastman Centennial and various ensembles.

In addition to Eastman’s student ensembles, several commissions are for faculty members performing in Eastman’s Faculty Artist Series performances throughout the year. These commissions and performances, along with many acclaimed guest artists and residencies, will be formally announced at a future date.

The three-semester-long Eastman Centennial celebration will begin in Fall 2021 and continue throughout 2022. Highlights include acclaimed guest artists performing alongside Eastman’s ensembles, national academic and music conferences, alumni events throughout the country, a documentary being produced in partnership with WXXI, and more. Pillar events include: “Opening of the Doors,” a community-driven celebration scheduled for March 3–6, 2022, “100 concerts to celebrate 100 years,” and a Meliora Weekend celebration in Fall 2022.
